A bridge too far – but not for Nationwide!

What do you do when a bridge needs urgent repairs, but you are limited in the loadings you can apply directly to the bridge deck?

This was the problem posed to Nationwide Access by Watson Steel Structures during a complex programme of repairs to the new Clyde Arc in Glasgow.

The result caused many a double-take around Glasgow – two 85ft booms were floated out on barges, and positioned beneath the bridge, so that the work could be carried out from below. These particular machines were chosen because the working height (27.90m) and outreach (23.40m) enabled them to comfortably reach the repair site from the water level. Even though these are very large machines, they are surprisingly versatile and manoeuvrable, and ideal for the job in hand.

Philippa James of Watson Steel Structures chose Nationwide because they have worked together recently on several high-profile jobs, and she knew that Nationwide had "a local depot, with the right equipment at the right price, and an excellent back-up service."

Lesley Moores, Sales Executive with Nationwide Access is thrilled with the success of the project. She explained: "Floating two huge booms on barges may seem like an unusual thing to do, but I’ve had a long relationship with Watson Steel Structures, and I was pleased to pull out all of the stops to make sure that they got the job done!"
